Finding Your Yoga.

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

I’ve had a lot of people reach out and ask what type of yoga they should start with when they’re new to it. It can be intimidating since there are now a hundred different types of yoga classes; Warm, Cool, Hot, Flow, Foundation, Ashtanga, Hatha, Yin, Yin/Yang, Yoga with Music, Yoga with Bunnies, Rage Yoga…the list goes on.

So how do you know which is right for you? The answer is actually pretty simple. Listen to your gut. When you read the name of the class are you intrigued or do you jump to the next one? When you read the description does it resonate with you or do you get a little anxious because you don’t know if you’re there yet?

Once you’ve got yourself a class that sounds like something you can get down to, just show up. This is yoga. Getting on your mat, wherever it is that your body, mind and spirit is in that moment and being present. Yoga will always meet you where you're at. Don’t get caught up in the words the teacher is saying or how advanced everyone around you may look, you have no idea the inner battle going on in their minds. Just do what you can; your body is pretty damn smart, it knows what it can and can’t quite do yet. It’ll tell you. Don’t push yourself because when you fight something or push too hard this is where you start to despise the act you’re doing, the same can be said with anything in daily life. Just do you, boo.

People tend to think that an advanced practitioner or “great yogi” are those who can do the crazy bends and twists, making themselves into pretzels, while this is amazing for them, it’s not the case at all; the best yogi’s are those who listen and honour their bodies; take rest when you need, come out of a pose when your body is asking you to, and hold gratitude, or the intention of gratitude, for everything your body does for you every single day even if it doesn’t look like an Instagram post.

Be well & Live loud, Amanda
